About
The Artist
I'm Jules Crane Vance (they/them), a trans and neurodivergent mapmaker based in Chicago. This all started when I agreed to help the GM of my five-year home game put together a map for the campaign. Needless to say, I was hooked. Since then, I've taken all kinds of commissions for fantasy novels, RPGs, personal projects, and other nerdy endeavors.
I take a collaborative approach to mapmaking; there will always be questions that come from putting things down on paper that didn't come up when the world was living in your head. My best work usually from a close collaboration and with the client. My work has helped me develop knowledge about things like climate zones, and tectonic plates, and while I am by no means an expert, I'm happy to offer that information if it's relevant to your project! Sometimes, though, a wizard just did it, and that's okay too.
I prefer work with physical media (I have a day job and spend enough time on a computer, thanks very much!) and draw my inspiration from traditional fantasy maps and calligraphy. You can pop right over to the gallery for examples of my work!
